The Rising Stars Foundation was born from a simple belief โ that talent and potential exist everywhere, but opportunity does not. We are here to change that.
Richard McEnery grew up in Spain, born to a Zambian father and an English mother with an extraordinary spirit for giving back. His mother founded multiple charities across Spain โ supporting elderly women, animal welfare, and co-founding Help for Africa with Richard and two friends, raising funds for local schools in Morocco.
After a career as a British Royal Marine Commando and later building and selling a successful risk management company based in London, Richard turned his life โ and that of his family โ toward philanthropy and purpose.
Arriving in South Africa with his South African wife and two children, there was no plan to start a football academy. The family already ran the Invite Wildlife Fund, supporting local conservation. But when Richard witnessed the raw potential of children from around Cape Town, he knew he had a role to play in giving them a chance to follow their dreams.
Rising Stars was born.
From a conversation in Kommetjie to 200+ players, 60+ bursaries, and clubs across Europe and Africa โ this is how it all unfolded.
We have built genuine relationships with some of Europe's most respected clubs and institutions โ creating a real, proven pathway for our players to reach the professional game.

Local South African professional football pathway
Our philosophy: We have the full pathway available โ from the streets of Cape Town to the stadiums of Europe. Now we nurture the talent, give them the education, and create great human beings.
Rising Stars competes at multiple levels across South Africa โ from grassroots juniors all the way to senior league football.
Our academy teams compete in the Two Oceans LFA from U8 all the way up to seniors. Our U16s play in the Seniors B League and our U18s step up to the Seniors A League โ real competitive experience for developing players.
Our franchise team competes in the 4th tier of South African football. This team exists solely for development โ not to climb the pyramid. We field our 16, 17 and 18 year old players here, giving them senior-level experience in a structured environment.
Our basketball teams play in the local Cape Town league from U12 to U18. We also have a partner club โ Rising Stars Bulldogs โ based in Ocean View, competing in the senior league.
Our Ghanaian academy brings the Rising Stars methodology and values to West Africa โ identifying and developing top talent and connecting them to the same European pathways available to our South African players.
Beyond Football
Rising Stars Basketball came about from a genuine need to grow community sport in our area.
Basketball is a team sport โ perfect for mass participation and building bonds across communities. With the NBA's growing investment into Africa, we wanted to give our children the excitement and opportunity of another elite sport pathway beyond football.
We now play in the local Cape Town league from U12 to U18, and partner with Rising Stars Bulldogs โ based in Ocean View โ who compete in the senior league.
